Mouassine Mosque

Mouassine, Marrakech

Overview

Mouassine Mosque was built by Saadian sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in the 16th century as the centerpiece of the newly developed Mouassine district on the medina's western side. Beside it stands an elaborate public fountain (Sabil Mouassine) that even includes a trough for camels, reflecting the Islamic charitable tradition of providing water to both humans and animals. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but the green-tiled roof and the fountain's carved decoration are worth seeing from outside. The surrounding Mouassine souk retains a lively, authentically local market atmosphere. Free to view from outside. About 10 minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fnaa.
