Slat al-Azama Synagogue (Mellah)

Mellah, Marrakech

Overview

The Slat al-Azama Synagogue is the central synagogue of Marrakech's Mellah, founded around 1557 by Sephardic Jews who settled here after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. It features a blue-tiled courtyard, white walls, and wooden balconies, standing as a living testament to a Jewish community that once numbered in the tens of thousands. The Mellah itself, a dedicated Jewish quarter established under the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century, is marked by narrow lanes and a distinct architectural style with balconies projecting onto the street, contrasting with the Islamic medina. Admission about MAD 20 (donation-based). About 5 minutes on foot from Bahia Palace.
