Overview
Built in 1147 during the Almohad dynasty, the Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech's defining landmark, its 77-meter minaret visible from every corner of the medina. The minaret is considered one of the three masterpieces of Almohad architecture along with Seville's Giralda and Rabat's Hassan Tower. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but the gardens, fountains, and minaret make a perfect starting point for medina strolls, and the floodlit tower at night is even more magical. Free to view from outside. Five minutes on foot from Jemaa el-Fnaa.
Opening Hours
Exterior 24 hours (interior Muslims only)
Travel Tips
Take photos from the nearby Koutoubia Gardens about 10 minutes before the minaret floodlights come on at dusk. Exterior photography is fine, but be respectful during prayer.
