Overview

The Hallstatt Protestant Church (Christuskirche) began as a modest prayer house after Emperor Joseph II's 1785 Patent of Toleration, and was completed in its current Gothic Revival form in 1863, after Protestants gained full civil rights under Emperor Franz Joseph I. Its tall spire, a few steps from the Marktplatz, forms part of the Hallstatt skyline, and the church hosts summer concerts. An information plaque at the entrance explains the history of Reformation-era persecution and the Toleration era. Free entry. 1-2 minute walk from the Marktplatz.
