Overview
Hallstatt's Market Square (Marktplatz) sits on a narrow strip of land between the lake and the mountain, forming the village's heart. Pastel-colored traditional wooden buildings, a Holy Trinity column (Pestsäule), and small cafes and souvenir shops create a fairytale-like space. Looking from the square toward the lake reveals emerald water and the mountains beyond in a picture-perfect composition. Wandering the narrow alleys and stairways from the square uncovers hidden photo spots. It's the best place to soak up everyday Hallstatt life. Free to visit. About 3 minutes on foot from the ferry dock.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours.
Travel Tips
Visit early morning or evening when tourists are fewer to feel the square's peaceful charm. Enjoying coffee at one of the square's cafes while looking out at the lake is also recommended.
