With roughly 7,000 years of history, this is the world's oldest salt mine — 'Hallstatt' itself means 'salt town.' A funicular carries you up the mountain, and inside the mine you experience two thrilling wooden slides and a subterranean salt lake with atmospheric lighting. Prehistoric mining tools and Bronze Age artifacts are on display as well. Admission (including funicular) about EUR 40. About 15 minutes on foot from the village center to the funicular station.

The view from the northern lakeshore looking back at the village is one of the world's most photographed scenes. With the Dachstein massif as a backdrop, pastel wooden houses, the church steeple, and the emerald lake all fit into one frame, mirrored in the still water in a scene almost too beautiful to be real. Early morning or just before sunset offers the best light. Free to visit. About 5 minutes on foot north of the ferry dock.

Dachstein Ice Cave

Dachstein Ice Cave

Located at around 1,400m inside the Dachstein massif, this vast natural ice cave features enormous ice pillars, frozen waterfalls, and ice altars illuminated by LED lights for a mesmerizing atmosphere. A cable car from Obertraun followed by a 20-minute walk brings you to the entrance. Nearby, the Mammuthöhle (Mammoth Cave) and Five Fingers viewing platform are also worth visiting. Admission (including cable car) about EUR 45 (combo ticket discount available). About 10 minutes by bus from Hallstatt to Obertraun.
