Overview
Rudolfsturm is a medieval watchtower built in the 13th century atop Salzberg mountain (about 1,082m elevation) to guard the approach to the salt mine. Inside, a small museum honors archaeologist Johann Georg Ramsauer, who excavated Hallstatt's Iron Age burial ground, and the terrace restaurant beside the tower offers meals with views over Lake Hallstatt. The Skywalk viewing platform is right next door, making for an easy combined visit. Note that the wider Salzwelten complex is partially closed for renovation until summer 2026, so check current opening status before visiting. Take the Salzbergbahn funicular from the village, or hike about 45-60 minutes.
