Overview
With roughly 7,000 years of history, this is the world's oldest salt mine — 'Hallstatt' itself means 'salt town.' A funicular carries you up the mountain, and inside the mine you experience two thrilling wooden slides and a subterranean salt lake with atmospheric lighting. Prehistoric mining tools and Bronze Age artifacts are on display as well. Admission (including funicular) about EUR 40. About 15 minutes on foot from the village center to the funicular station.
Opening Hours
09:30-16:00 (until 18:00 May-September; closed November-March).
Travel Tips
The mine interior stays around 8°C even in summer, so bring a long-sleeved layer. The Skywalk viewing platform offers lake panoramas on the way.
