Overview
Waldbachstrub is a roughly 90m waterfall hidden deep in the Echern Valley, about 1.5-2.5 hours' walk from Hallstatt village, formed where the Waldbach, Klauskogelbach, and Lauterbach streams converge. It was a favorite haunt of 19th-century Romantic painters, and writer Adalbert Stifter is said to have drawn inspiration here for his novels 'Der Nachsommer' and 'Bergkristall.' The hiking trail is free and open to the public, but the final stretch is rated a difficult ('black') path by the Austrian Alpine Club, requiring hiking boots and good fitness. Follow the Echerntalweg ('Painters' Path') on foot from the village.
Opening Hours
Accessible during daylight hours year-round, though winter ice can restrict access.
Travel Tips
The final section is a demanding path, so don't push through it without hiking experience. Check the weather and trail conditions before setting out.
