Overview
Obertraun sits on the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt, opposite the crowded main village, offering a quieter alternative for travelers who want to linger. First recorded as 'Obere Traun' in 1325, it was administratively separated from Hallstatt in 1920. It serves as the gateway to the three Dachstein show caves (Koppenbrüllerhöhle, Mammoth Cave, Ice Cave), the Krippenstein cable car, and the 5 Fingers viewing platform, and in summer its lakeside Strandbad offers a relaxed swim. About 15-20 minutes from Hallstatt by local train, bus, lake boat shuttle, or car.
💰 Tickets
Free to walk the village and lakeshore; the Strandbad lido has a separate seasonal fee.
